Teen Anxiety Takes Many Forms
Anxious teenagers in Cary rarely say "I'm anxious." They say their stomach hurts, they refuse to go to school, or they get angry. These are the patterns our therapists recognize and address.
Academic & Test Anxiety
Overwhelming pressure around grades, standardized tests, and college prep that interferes with performance and wellbeing.
Social Anxiety
Intense fear of embarrassment or judgment that leads to avoiding peers, school events, or any situation with social risk.
Perfectionism
Impossibly high standards, fear of making mistakes, and self-worth tied entirely to achievement and performance.
Panic Attacks
Sudden surges of intense physical fear — racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness — that disrupt daily life.
School Refusal
Persistent avoidance of school driven by anxiety, not defiance — often misunderstood and mishandled by adults.
OCD & Intrusive Thoughts
Recurring, distressing thoughts and compulsive behaviors designed to reduce the anxiety those thoughts provoke.
Separation Anxiety
Difficulty separating from parents or leaving home beyond what is developmentally expected for the teen's age.
Body Image & Identity Anxiety
Intense worry about appearance, social identity, or fitting in that creates persistent emotional distress.

Therapy That Actually Works for Teens
Teen therapy is not adult therapy in a smaller chair. We use approaches designed for how adolescents think, communicate, and process experience.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Teaching teens to identify anxious thought patterns, challenge them, and face feared situations at a pace they can handle.
Exposure Therapy
Gradual, supported practice of approaching feared situations — the most effective evidence-based way to reduce anxiety long-term.
Mindfulness & Regulation Skills
Practical tools teenagers can actually use when anxiety spikes — in class, before tests, or in social situations.
Parent Coaching
Helping parents respond to teen anxiety in ways that build confidence rather than inadvertently reinforcing avoidance.
School Collaboration
When needed, coordinating with school counselors and staff to create appropriate, supportive structures.
Telehealth Available
Many teens prefer the privacy of online sessions — we offer telehealth throughout North Carolina.
We Accept Most Major Insurance Plans
We're in-network with many major insurance providers and offer transparent private-pay options. We want cost to be a solvable problem, not a barrier.
Questions About Teen Anxiety Therapy
My teen refuses to come to therapy — what do I do?
This is incredibly common with anxious teenagers. Avoidance is actually a symptom of anxiety, not defiance. We can coach you on how to approach the conversation in a way that makes therapy feel less threatening — and sometimes a quick call with the therapist before the first session helps teens feel less uncertain about what to expect.
Will the therapist tell me everything my teen says?
No — and being clear about this with your teen upfront is important. Therapy with adolescents involves confidentiality with limited exceptions for safety concerns. Your teen needs to feel safe being honest, which requires knowing their disclosures won't automatically reach you.
How is teen therapy different from adult therapy?
Adolescent therapy is more active and collaborative. It's less about talking through feelings and more about building specific skills, doing challenging activities, and working on concrete goals. Most teens are surprised by how useful sessions actually feel.
How many sessions will my teen need?
Many teens see meaningful improvement in 8–12 sessions. Anxiety responds well to focused, evidence-based treatment when the approach fits the teen. We set goals from the start and track progress together.
Your Teen Doesn't Have to Navigate This Alone
