How to Find a Good Marriage Counsellor: What to Expect From Relationship Counselling and How Successful Is It?

Fresh Breath TherapyNorth Carolina6 min read

John Gottman's investigation revealed something disturbing. Couples wait an average of 6 years of dissatisfaction before making a session.

6 years. And half of the marriages that do break up break up within the first seven.

So if you are seeking marriage counselors today, you are most probably not early. Most people are not." The good news is couples therapy has better outcomes than most people imagine, and the statistics on that is pretty robust. This is a guide on how to find a nice individual, what truly happens in the room and what the data suggest.

What Is a Marriage Counsellor?

A marriage counsellor is a therapist who has been trained and schooled to work with the relationship, not the people in the partnership. Who is the client? The pair.

In North Carolina, that typically implies an LMFT, or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or an LMFTA, which is the provisional license you hold while you are finishing your supervised hours. Couples also work with licensed professional social workers and counsellors, and many of them are very good at it. What counts more than the licence is that they do this work regularly.

To be fully licensed as an LMFT, the board in North Carolina requires 1,500 recorded clinical hours and 200 hours of supervision with an AAMFT approved supervisor. That's a real bar and it's possible to be publicly verified.

How to Choose a Good Marriage Therapist

How to Find a Marriage Counsellor and Not Spend Three Months With the Wrong One.

Check the licence first. Takes 2 min.

The North Carolina Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board maintains a real-time verification register at ncbmft.org. If any disciplinary action is taken it is published there. Look at it before the first call, not after the third session.

Then ask one hard filter question. What % of your case load is couples?

Warm on the phone but not really a couples specialist if they see two couples a month out of forty unique clients. You want someone who does this weekly.

And then:

  • Ask what model they're using. The two that have the most research behind them are Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method.
  • Are they siding with? The fact is no, and they should be able to tell you how they stay neutral but not passive.
  • Logistics verification. Evening appointments, online meetings and if you can actually both make it to the same hour every week.
  • Enquire about individual sessions. Most relationship counselors have an initial session with each person. Look what happens with what you say in it.

Do not list horoscopes in the directory. "I create a safe, non-judgmental space" doesn't mean anything. Everyone does.

What to expect from marital counsellors

Four things, in more or less sequence of importance.

  • Relevant experience. Infidelity, a sexless marriage, addiction, a blended family, an affair exposed last week, are all individual psychological difficulties. Just ask them whether they have treated yours.
  • Some method they can call it. If they state they utilise an "eclectic" approach and can't say any more than that, that's usually a polite way of stating no framework.
  • Organization. Good couples work has a shape: assessment, feedback about what is really going wrong and then targeted action. By the third or fourth session you should know what the plan is going to be.
  • A comfort to you both. Not merely a booking partner. If one of you starts to feel outnumbered in the room, the therapy stops. Speak it early.

When to Get Marriage Counselling

Under six years. Faster than you think.

The clearest signs: the same argument over and over again with no resolution, contempt or eye rolling creeping into regular conversation, avoiding each other, one of you emotionally tuned out, a betrayal or a big transition done badly. A new born infant. Jobs gone. Parent moves in

Counselling also has a prophylactic function, which practically nobody is using. Couples who come in when things are just tight do better than couples who come in when there is a catastrophe. It's not really a moral argument. And that is precisely what the outcome data reveals.

What to Anticipate from Relationship Therapy

Sessions start off weekly and eventually less often.

The first few are assessments. Your therapist is following the pattern: who chases, who draws away, what the true conflict is under the sink. They will ask you about your family, your history as a couple, and what scares you the most.

Then work. You're cut off mid-argument, which seems a little awkward at first. This is done on purpose. The point is to slow down a cycle so you can watch it happen.

You'll likely have things to practise between sessions. Not homework in the scholastic sense but talk to try differently.

And it will feel worse before it will feel better, often. Then it's not fun to talk about things you've both been so careful not to say. Then the stage is finished.

What Is the Process of Couples Therapy?

The mechanism is not as mysterious as it sounds.

Most couples in problems are stuck in a cycle. One partner brings up a problem. The other partner gets defensive or checks out. The first partner gets more intense, the second partner withdraws more. Neither is wrong about their own experience. They both are responding to the loop, not each other

Couples therapy interrupts the loop in real time again and over again until an alternative response is feasible. In Emotionally Focused Therapy, we view the wants and worries of each person through the prism of attachment. The Gottman Method is more behavioural, about handling conflict and friendship. Both are good ones. They both do roughly the same thing, but in different ways.

FAQs

Where do I locate an excellent marriage counsellor near me?

Verify their licensing with the North Carolina Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board at ncbmft.org. Then enquire what percent of their clientele is couples and what model of treatment they use. Your individual problem experience is more important than closeness, especially with the recent frequent availability of internet sessions.

Does marriage counseling really work?

Sure. For a lot of couples. AAMFT statistics shows that almost 90% of clients report improved emotional health after treatment. EFT research shows a 70-73% recovery rate. "The earlier couples come in, and the more both partners contribute, the better the outcomes.

Duration of couples treatment

The usual course is eight to twelve sessions a week, although in challenging cases many more may be required. After the assessment stage, your therapist should be able to give you a ballpark figure

Can you go to marriage counseling by yourself?

Yes, and it can help, especially with your own proclivities in the relationship. But it's more harder to change at the relationship level without both people in the room.

What if my partner doesn't want to?

Begin each one separately. "Sometimes partners show up after a couple of sessions when it doesn't feel like an ambush." Therapists can also recommend ways to raise it up.

How Does Online Marriage Counselling Compare to In Person?

Research supports the delivery of psychotherapy via telemedicine, and for couples with small children or competing schedules, it's often the version that gets done consistently.
