Therapy That Works the Way You Do

Most men who come in have been handling it for a long time. The stress is normal, the short fuse is just how you are now, and asking for help sits somewhere between unnecessary and embarrassing. Then something starts costing you - your sleep, your marriage, your patience with your kids.

Therapy for men at Fresh Breath Therapy is direct, practical, and goal-oriented. No lying on a couch describing your childhood unless that's actually relevant. We start with what you want different, work out what's driving it, and give you tools you can use in a real week.

You also don't need a crisis to be here. Plenty of men come in because the anger is showing up at home, because they're flat and can't say why, or because they can see the pattern and are done repeating it. That's a good enough reason.

What We Help With

What Men Bring Into Therapy in Cary

You don't need a diagnosis or a breakdown to benefit. If something's costing you at home or at work, that's reason enough.

Stress & Burnout

Work pressure, financial responsibility, and a load that never lets up - plus what to actually do about it beyond pushing harder.

Anxiety & Overthinking

Racing thoughts at 2am, constant low-grade tension, and the physical symptoms that show up before you notice the worry.

Depression & Feeling Flat

Low motivation, irritability, withdrawal, and going through the motions. In men it often looks like anger or numbness rather than sadness.

Anger & Short Fuse

Snapping at people you care about, regretting it afterwards, and the shame cycle that follows. This is learnable, not fixed.

Relationship Strain

Communication that keeps going wrong, feeling shut out or criticized, and rebuilding connection after distance or betrayal.

Divorce, Custody & Co-Parenting

Separation, custody stress, and staying a steady presence for your kids in the middle of it.

Grief & Loss

A death, a marriage ending, a career ending - and the version of yourself that went with it.

Purpose & Identity

Not knowing what you want anymore, or feeling like you've been performing a role for so long you've lost the thread.

Career Pressure & Performance

High-pressure roles in the Triangle, layoffs and reorgs, and worth that rises and falls with your last quarter.

Our Therapeutic Approach

Evidence-Based Approaches, Applied Practically

No single approach fits everyone. Your therapist draws on proven methods and adapts to how you think, communicate, and process - so sessions feel productive rather than forced.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Structured and practical: identify the thinking that's driving the stress or anger, test it, and change what you do with it. Concrete tools, not vague insight.

ACT

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

Get clear on what actually matters to you and act on it - even when the feelings haven't sorted themselves out first.

SKILLS

Anger & Emotional Regulation Skills

Recognize the build-up earlier, get the pause back before the reaction, and repair afterwards without it turning into another fight.

TIC

Trauma-Informed Care

If something happened that you've never talked about, nothing gets forced. Safety, choice, and pacing are built into every session.

COMM

Communication & Relationship Skills

Practical phrasing for hard conversations - with a partner, a co-parent, a boss - so you're heard instead of escalating or shutting down.

EMDR

EMDR Available In-Practice

EMDR lets you work through difficult memories without narrating them in detail - available through our practice, including via telehealth.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is therapy only for people in crisis?+

No - and most of our male clients aren't in one. They come in for ongoing stress, a relationship that's stuck, anger they don't like in themselves, or a general sense of being flat. Therapy is useful well before things fall apart.

Do I have to talk about my feelings the whole time?+

No. Plenty of men prefer a problem-solving, goal-oriented approach, and that works. We start with the situation and what you want to change - the emotional side tends to come up naturally through that, at whatever depth is useful.

How long does this take?+

It depends on the goal. Focused work on stress, anger, or a specific decision often shows real change in 8 to 12 sessions. Long-standing depression, trauma, or patterns going back decades take longer. Your therapist will give you a straight read after the first few sessions.

Can I request a male therapist?+

You can tell us your preference and we'll be honest about availability - most of our current clinicians are women. Plenty of men find that works well, and gender matters less than fit for most clients, but if a male therapist is important to you we'd rather say so upfront than waste your time.

Is everything confidential?+

Yes. Protected by HIPAA and NC law, with the same narrow legal exceptions as all therapy. Your employer has no access to your records. If you use insurance, the insurer may receive a diagnosis code for billing - never session content.

Do you serve Apex, Morrisville, and Holly Springs?+

Yes. Our Cary office on Edinburgh South Dr serves clients from across the Triangle, including Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, RTP, and west Raleigh. Telehealth is also available anywhere in North Carolina.
